Déclaration du premier ministre Horgan et du ministre Heyman à l’occasion du Jour de la Terre 2020
VICTORIA – Le premier ministre John Horgan et le ministre de l’Environnement et de la Stratégie en matière de changement climatique, George Heyman, ont fait la déclaration suivante pour célébrer le 50e anniversaire du Jour de la Terre.
« Aujourd’hui, en Colombie-Britannique et dans le monde entier, on célèbre le 50e anniversaire du Jour de la Terre.
Il y a de cela un demi-siècle, le premier Jour de la Terre a été l’étincelle qui a incité une génération à intervenir pour protéger notre environnement naturel dans le but de bâtir un avenir meilleur et plus durable pour tous.
Depuis longtemps, la Colombie-Britannique fait preuve d’une intendance environnementale dont les citoyennes et les citoyens peuvent être fiers. Celle-ci joue un rôle important dans l’unicité de notre province. La population britanno-colombienne a toujours été à l’avant-garde en matière de protection de l’environnement, et cette tradition se poursuit jusqu’à ce jour.
Ensemble, nous relevons le défi collectif que présentent les changements climatiques. La Colombie-Britannique dispose de l’un des plus solides plans d’action du continent en matière de changements climatiques – CleanBC. CleanBC constitue un plan détaillé pour favoriser la création d’un avenir meilleur et plus propre pour les citoyennes et les citoyens des collectivités de partout en province.
L’automne dernier, les Britanno-Colombiennes et les Britanno-Colombiens se sont fait entendre lors d’une marche pour revendiquer une intervention d’envergure à l’égard des changements climatiques. En octobre, notre gouvernement a renforcé la responsabilisation et la transparence au titre de notre plan CleanBC en déposant la Climate Change Accountability Act (loi sur la responsabilité en matière de changements climatiques).
En ce Jour de la Terre, nous réaffirmons notre engagement à prendre des mesures dans l’intérêt des générations futures.
Nous avons démontré qu’il n’y a pas de limite à ce que nous pouvons accomplir ensemble en travaillant vers l’atteinte d’un objectif commun. Il n’a jamais été aussi important de comprendre et d’estimer le lien entre la santé de la planète et la santé des gens. Ensemble, nous continuerons à bâtir un avenir meilleur où les intérêts des gens et de l’environnement vont de pair. »

Premier and minister’s statement on Earth Day 2020
Premier John Horgan and George Heyman, Minister of Environment and Climate Change Strategy, have issued the following statement to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Earth Day:
“Today, people in British Columbia and around the world are celebrating the 50th anniversary of Earth Day.
“Half a century ago, the first Earth Day sparked a generation to stand up and protect our natural environment to build a better, more sustainable future for everyone to enjoy.
“In British Columbia, we have a long legacy of environmental stewardship that people can be proud of. It’s an important part of what makes our province so unique. People in B.C. have consistently been ahead of the curve on environmental protection, and this tradition continues to this day.
“Together, we are rising to the collective challenge of climate change. In B.C., we have one of the strongest climate action plans on the continent – CleanBC. CleanBC is a blueprint to help build a cleaner, better future for people living in communities throughout the province.
“Last fall, British Columbians made their voices heard by marching for strong action on climate change. In October, our government added better accountability and improved transparency to our CleanBC plan by introducing the Climate Change Accountability Act.
“On Earth Day, we reaffirm our commitment to taking action for the benefit of future generations.
“We have shown there is no limit to what we can accomplish together when we work toward a common purpose. It has never been more important to understand and value the connection between the health of the planet and the health of people. Together, we will continue to build a better future where the interests of people and the environment go hand in hand.”

Statement by the Prime Minister on Earth Day
The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today issued the following statement on Earth Day:
“On Earth Day, we come together with people around the world to celebrate the planet we share. We also take stock of the significant challenges facing our environment – climate change first among them.
“People around the globe are already facing the devastating effects of climate change. And from the IPCC report last fall to the recent Canada’s Changing Climate report, the outlook is clear: only with ambitious, concerted action can we safeguard the environment we all depend on, for our generation and the next. Today, we come together as a world to fight for our future.
“Climate change is already affecting us here at home. Canada’s North is heating up at three times the global average. Glaciers are shrinking. Sea levels are rising. Our oceans are warming and acidifying as they trap carbon dioxide. Floods, fires, heat waves, tornadoes – extreme weather phenomena are becoming more intense and more frequent, threatening communities across the country.
“Canadians are stepping up to protect their communities, and taking the lead on climate action. Since 2015, the federal government has been in their corner. We put a price on pollution to reduce emissions, protect our clean air and water, and create opportunities for Canadian businesses. With Budget 2019, we’re making zero-emission vehicles more affordable, investing in more energy efficient buildings, and supporting communities’ environmental priorities. By working together – with provinces and territories, Indigenous peoples, and all communities – we can tackle climate change head on, and safeguard our quality of life now and for the future.
“But this global problem needs global solutions. Canada is working with partners around the world to meet our Paris Agreement commitments, and fight climate change and its disastrous effects – including by helping developing countries fund adaptation and resiliency measures. Our world’s oceans and coastal communities bear particular impacts of climate change, and Canada is a leader in protecting them – from our historic Oceans Protection Plan to the Ocean Plastics Charter launched under our G7 presidency. We are also partnering with the Government of Nunavut and the Qikiqtani Inuit Association to explore the potential protection of areas in Tuvaijuittuq – the last area of Canada’s High Arctic region expected to retain summer sea ice until at least 2050.
“Climate change is bigger than any one of us. We only have one Earth, and that’s what’s on the line. Our environment is our future. We’re going to fight for it, for all of us.”
